Legislative Session 2022

Your Legislator's Voting Record on Education

Education Opportunity had a great first session advocating for children. Below are a list of bills which we supported along with a brief description. We have also included the voting record of each legislator on these bills along with a grade. Our hope is that you will use this as a guide to reach out and speak to your legislators about education choice.

Good policy comes about from open dialogue and a willingness to get involved. We hope this will give you a place to start in guiding your conversations especially during this election cycle.

SB62 Sub 4 Special Needs Opportunity Scholarship

PASSED

This bill expands the eligibility of the the current education scholarship account for special needs to include siblings.

This is a big win for families and another small step in the right direction in getting education choice for all students in Utah.

SB 134 Sub 4 Special Education Amendments

This bill brought Utah State rule, which was more restrictive, into alignment with the Federal regulations surrounding IDEA.

Effectively this will allow students with disabilities access to general education classrooms, the least restrictive environment as required by federal law.

SB 191 Sub 2 Regulatory Sandbox in Education

PASSED

This bill allows for a district or charter school to apply to the State Board for a waver of restricted monies to be used on an innovative plan to implement at the school.

This bill allows for schools to have more flexibility in money and services to better meet the needs of all students.

HB 331 Sub 5 Hope Scholarship

FAILED

This bill created education scholarship accounts for all students in Utah. Allowing parents to direct those funds to the education that suited their child best.

The scholarship accounts would be administered by a 501(c)3 organization outside of the Utah State Office of Education. The total amount of money requested was $36M.
