Many Opportunities to Thrive

My name is Michelle and I’m going to share with you some of my home schooling experiences.

I have five children between the ages of 14 and 27 and they’ve all been homeschooled at least once in their lives. Lots of people have a lot of different reasons for why they began. Most of my reasons were because I had a deep concern about the social environment that my children were in. I also wanted them to grow up to be strong people with good character and faith in Jesus Christ.

There are a lot of opportunities for sociality and extracurriculars in a homeschool setting.

When I pulled my older son, he was a sophomore in high school. He said to me, “ Mom, I just realized how much time I was wasting sitting in a classroom. My lessons don’t need to be 90 minutes long and I can get so much more done. I can pursue my own interests.”  He did most of his high school classes at home. He also participated in a specialized class for entering into fire services which gave him some college credit to pursue a career in fire and safety services.

My second son got into the college of his choice just based on his SAT scores.

My younger son, 14, who has never been in public school participates in a co-op. We have 16 youths in our co-op and it’s really fun. We’ve done plays, graduations, and projects. We’re preparing for a marketplace event where all the youth will create a product and sell it at a local outdoor mall. They have a lot of opportunities that they can pursue. Really, the sky’s the limit as far as what their interests are and what the other parents in the co-op’s talent base is.
